>> friday night, western edition, four people were shot execution style. they sat in the car. killers still had their work. police have made an important discovery in this case. vic lee is in the newsroom with the story you'll see only on 7. vic? >> we've learned police now have the car they believe was used in the shooting. multiple sources tell abc7 news it was a rental car. no arrests have been made but this may mean they're getting closer. >> the car was rented from the hertz office here on main street last week before the friday-night massacre. four victims, three identified members of a gang, were shot at

close range in their parked stolen car on what guna and page streets. police say their executioners likely used four guns. sources tell us the suspects car was returned to hertz this week. san francisco police later took possession of it and asked hertz to call them if the person who rented this car went back. wednesday morning a possible sighting as some suspects resulted in the search of a neighborhood in walnut creek. two men and a women came to the office asking for another rental. an employee notified san francisco police that he thought one of them was a person they're looking for. at the request of san francisco, walnut creek police using canines responded while homicide inspectors from the city were on the way. one of the men fled on foot. officers arrived, leading to a search of the area. two schools were locked down. police eventually found them hiding in a bin near contra costa christian school.

police released the men and female companion. the official reason for the release is that it was a case of mistaken identity. sources say there may be more to it. we've learned investigations have developed names for people they're looking for. they believe four gunmen were likely members of a rival group. police declined comment because the case is still under investigation. vic lee, abc7 news >> thank you so much. three members of the solano community college basketball team have been ex-pell aftered an arrest on assault charges accused of beating another student with baseball bats and crowbars and heavily damaging her car the woman survived the attack. the basketball players are charged with assault and conspiracy. >> this video was shot yesterday

morning, a family says the car wasn't locked but the man in the video broke in any way. >> a fire station in contra costa county opened for the first time in two and a half years. station 11 closed because of budget cuts officials say a federal grant helped the district and firefighters to the staff. in september, 2013 the fire started on the east side, the engine would have been the first one to respond. >> knowing the area, would it have made a difference if there is a crew here it probably would not have gotten as large as it did. >> the station will now be staffed 24-7 with three firefighters and an engine the federal grant money is for two years but the rebounding economy is confident to keep it open well beyond. that we'll see. >> it's been 25 years since the first 800 pound sea lion hauled

a california apple grower issued a massive recall of gala and granny smith apples linked to a listeria outbreak. a woman died after eating contaminated apples during halloween. it traces to a plant in bakersfield. health officials found several sample that's contained the bacteria.

responding to a fire in palo alto the story starting with the dispatch audio. you can hear frustration of firefighters trying to get to a burning home. >> have you crossed over ten # yet? how does it look? >> i haven't made it to 101 yet. we have heavy traffic. we're working down state. >> the same gridlock is already slowing down emergency crews. palo alto's fire department says during morning and evening rush hour response times is averaging 30 seconds longer. it doesn't sound serious until you hear this. >> it's critical when you you're talking about a golden minute for a heart attack, a fire, with all of the plastics and different items in homes these days. >> clogged streets are putting first responders at greater risk. an engine was on the scene in

minutes and took eight minutes or longer for rigs to get through gridlock >> then becomes a matter of life and death and people losing property and more of it. it's a matter of safety and personnel but they need more help to put the fire out. >> residents are growing worried >> it's very sad. we do need our fire department. and we do need help. >> and response? >> of course. >> and the traffic isn't helping. >> no. >> communities are not likely to accept longer response times no matter what the excuse is. some solutions can be costly, such as building more fire stations. however, the fire department has come up with one idea that could save time and money. for a week, every fire apparatus and station have a paramedic on duty. smaller rigs might also be considered.

available on your smart phone tablet or computer. >> finally tonight two men, one from the bay area did something that has never been done before. kevin jorgeson and tommy caldwell are the first people on the planet to make what some consider the world's toughest free climb. three weeks they struggled up the don wall of the mighty el captain, sleeping intents dangling on the shear face of the cliff. the 3,000 foot climb did not go as expected. chewed up hands forced kevin to rest for days while fingers healed enough to continue. by refusing to stop he showed grit and determination and by refusing to go on without him, tommy caldwell demonstrated self sacrifice and loyalty.
